Tonight, Sir David McVicar's Ring Cycle returns to the Teatro alla Scala, with Ólafur Sigurdarson appearing in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried. Ólafur has been described as ''the best Alberich in the world'', and he returns to the role at La Scala, where his last appearance as the Nibelung dwarf in this same production was proclaimed as ''flawless''. Ólafur has sung other celebrated performances of this character at Bayreuth and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
Ólafur will be conducted by Alexander Soddy for both Das Rheingold and Siegfried, alongside a cast of mainly the same singers across both operas, including some of the world's most celebrated interpreters of the Ring's characters, including Michael Volle, Okka von der Damerau, and Klaus Florian Vogt. This is a major and exciting cycle for the House, and we are proud to represent the world's finest Alberich in this significant endeavour.
