Russian bass Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev has attracted acclaim for his rich, velvety tone and his commanding dramatic presence - qualities ideally suited to both Russian and Italian repertoire. Critics have particularly highlighted his interpretive gifts in Italian repertoire, and his “effortless command of legato lines and bel canto phrasing”.
His current engagements include Pimen Boris Godunov at Opéra de Lyon, Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor at the Opernhaus Zürich, Timur Turandot at the Teatro de la Maestranza, Gremin Eugene Onegin at the Teatro Real Madrid, and König Marke Tristan und Isolde at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. He also performed Vodník Rusalka at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, and sings Verdi’s Requiem with the Dutch National Opera.
In previous seasons, he made notable appearances as Vodník Rusalka at the Dutch National Opera, Bartolo Le nozze di Figaro at the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, debuts as Vodník Rusalka at the Teatro Real Madrid and the Teatro de la Maestranza, Pimen Boris Godunov at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Basilio Il barbiere di Siviglia at Staatsoper Hamburg, Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Rodolfo La sonnambula at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.
