In demand on the most prestigious stages throughout Canada, the USA and Europe, Irish-Canadian tenor Michael Colvin has garnered critical acclaim for his appearances as Duke of Cornwall in new productions of Reimann’s Lear at Opéra National de Paris, Teatro Maggio Musicale di Fiorentino and Salzburger Festspiele; Rodolphe in a new production of Guillaume Tell and Bardolfo Falstaff at The Royal Ballet & Opera; The Witch Hänsel und Gretel at the Canadian Opera Company; Herod Salome at English National Opera and Northern Ireland Opera; Bob Boles Peter Grimes, and Painter/Second Client in William Kentridge’s acclaimed production of Lulu - both at English National Opera; Monostatos Die Zauberflöte with the Canadian Opera Company and the The Royal Ballet and Opera.

In the 2024/25 season, Colvin has made his debut in Valencia with L’Aumonier in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, as well as returning to his home company, Canadian Opera Company for two productions: The Fool Wozzeck and Monsieur Triquet Eugene Onegin. Last season, Colvin made three significant company debuts: at Teatro alla Scala in one of his signature roles, Bob Boles in Robert Carsen’s new production of Peter Grimes; at the Staatsoper Hamburg as Arturo Lucia di Lammermoor; and at Teatro Real Madrid as Duke of Cornwall Lear. Recent highlights include a double appearance at the Opéra National de Paris as Monostatos in Robert Carsen’s Die Zauberflöte and Spoletta Tosca under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel and at the Salzburger Festspiele as Bardolfo Falstaff.

Closely associated with English National Opera, his appearances with the company include Herod in a new production of Salome; Arturo in David Alden’s production of Lucia di Lammermoor; Painter/Second Client Lulu; Flute A Midsummer Night’s Dream; the title role of Peter Grimes and Goro Madama Butterfly. At home in Canada, he was seen as Dr Caius Falstaff, Don Basilio Le nozze di Figaro and The Witch Hänsel und Gretel and Monostatos Die Zauberflöte, all with the Canadian Opera Company.

Other engagements include Don Basilio Le nozze di Figaro at the Opéra National de Paris; Reimann’s Lear in Paris and Teatro Maggio Musicale di Fiorentino; Laios in Enescu’s Œdipe and Duke of Cornwall Lear at the Salzburger Festspiele; Rodolphe Guillaume Tell, Bardolfo Falstaff and Monostatos at The Royal Ballet and Opera, Covent Garden; L'Aumonier Dialogues des Carmélites for Dutch National Opera; and Jaquino Fidelio with Le Cercle de l’Harmonie in Lyon and Paris. A fine Britten interpreter, he has performed to great acclaim the role of Bob Boles Peter Grimes at English National Opera, the George Enescu Festival, the Ópera de Oviedo, Flemish Opera, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski, and in Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Sir Antonio Pappano.

Michael Colvin and Craig Colclough as Bardolph and Pistol respectively, were wonderfully funny and irreverent in their roles

The truly demonic Quint created by the one adult newcomer to the cast, Michael Colvin. He’s almost bestial with his claw-like hands, hunched back, lurching gait and spookily disembodied singing - The Times

Irish Canadian tenor Michael Colvin was a superlative Monsieur Triquet… Colvin’s rendition of this aria was delightful thanks to his excellent French and singing style. Few non-native speakers can sing and interpret this aria as well

I thought Michael Colvin was without doubt the best Bob Boles I have heard and seen; this ‘Methody’ struck a fine balance between a figure of fun and the conscience of the Borough, taking the moral high ground when regarding Grimes as a lost soul of a fisherman
