Future projects include The Maid of Orleans, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov at Dutch National Opera, debuts at Theater an der Wien and the Wexford Festival Opera, as well as a return to Teatro Regio Torino.
In concert, Uryupin will appear with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra.
In recent seasons, Uryupin has appeared at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, with Carmen, the Bayerische Staatsoper with Dido and Aeneas...Erwartung, Oper Frankfurt with The Enchantress and Oedipus Rex/Iolanta, Teatro Regio Torino with The Queen of Spades, New National Theatre Tokyo with Eugene Onegin, and Staatsoper Stuttgart with The Love for Three Oranges. He has also led opera productions at the Bregenzer Festspiele, including Eugene Onegin and Siberia.

Valentin Uryupin has served as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow and as Principal Conductor of the Rostov Symphony Orchestra in Rostov-on-Don. His programming in both institutions was noted for its artistic breadth and innovative approach to Russian and international repertoire. In Russia, he has conducted the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, and musicAeterna, to name a few.
In 2021, he led the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra in its Lucerne Festival debut, followed by their first CD release featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique”.
Valentin is the winner of the 8th Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition in Frankfurt and the 5th Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg.
Born in Lozovaya, Ukraine, Uryupin first gained international attention as a clarinettist, winning more than 20 international competitions and performing worldwide before devoting himself fully to conducting.
He studied both clarinet and conducting at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, under Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Evgeny Petrov, and received guidance from Valery Gergiev, Teodor Currentzis, and Vladimir Jurowski, as well as participating in Kurt Masur’s final masterclass.
Although his solo career has largely given way to his conducting path, he continues to appear occasionally in play-conduct performances, combining both roles, and remains an active and passionate chamber musician.
