David Leigh debuts at Teatro Colon as John Claggart
This July, bass-baritone David Leigh makes his debut at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, stepping into the menacing role of John Claggart in Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd. Performances run on July 2, 5, 10, and 12, 2025, in a bold new staging directed by Marcelo Lombardero and conducted by Erik Nielsen.

Leigh, celebrated for his rich, resonant timbre and compelling dramatic presence, brings Claggart’s lurking authority and psychological menace vividly to life. His vocal depth and emotional conviction underscore the opera’s intense moral and existential currents.

This appearance follows a standout season, including a debut at the Opéra de Paris in the rare Rossini work Il viaggio di Dante, where Leigh impressed critics with his vocal agility and nuanced characterisation. He has also been acclaimed for his portrayal of Hagen in the Ring Cycle at Opernhaus Zürich, generating praise for his vocal power and dramatic heft.

With a repertoire spanning Wagner, Rossini, Britten, and beyond, Leigh continues to reinforce his reputation as a versatile and commanding interpreter.
