Derek Welton debuts at the Staatsoper Hamburg as Wotan in Die Walküre

Derek Welton makes his house debut at the Staatsoper Hamburg this October, singing Wotan in Die Walküre in Claus Guth's acclaimed production. Conducted by Omer Meir Wellber, Welton sings the role on 3rd, 10th and 18th October, and 1st November.

‍

Welton's Wotan is one of today's most admired, and he has brought the role to some of the world's leading stages. Stepping in at short notice at the Opéra national de Paris in 2025, he was hailed as "a charismatic presence [with] noble, powerful singing, endowed with a rich timbre, unfurled in sumptuous colours" (Forum Opéra). At the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2024, he was celebrated as “totally praiseworthy in his portrayal of Wotan, ever moving, and singing fully with emotion” (OperaWire).

‍

Looking ahead, highlights of Welton's 2026/27 season include a return to the Royal Ballet and Opera as Orest in Elektra, house debuts at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Deutsche Oper am Rhein in the title role of Der fliegende Holländer, and his Opéra de Monte-Carlo debut as the Wanderer in Siegfried. On the concert platform, he sings Wotan and the Wanderer in concert performances of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Konzerthaus Wien, and The Dream of Gerontius with the Oslo Philharmonic, among others.
