Tonight at the Theater an der Wien, Inna Demenkova stars as Berenice in Rossini's one-act farce L'occasione fa il ladro. This opera is full of classic buffo tropes: swapping costumes, mixed lovers, a baritone with his bass manservant, and warring coloratura between soprano and tenor.
This is a big debut for Inna, who presents not only her first Berenice but also a house debut at the Theater an der Wien. This new production is created by Marcos Darbyshire, who brings his comic skills to bear for this one-act exhibition of all the humour Rossini would demonstrate in his later productions - particularly, of course, Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Conducted by Pedro Beriso, this production brings together a cast of noted Rossinians, including Alberto Robert, Roberto Lorenzi, and Petra Radulovic.
