Praised for a voice “emboldened by projection, firmness, and extension - sailing effortlessly over tempestuous orchestras... the half-tones are rounded and full, the high notes never strained. She seems boundless,” soprano Ekaterina Sannikova continues to make her mark as a powerful dramatic presence on international stages.
This season, Sannikova makes her Teatro alla Scala debut in Milan as Aksinya Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and takes on the title role in Madama Butterfly at Oper Leipzig. She also stars in the title role of Francesca da Rimini at the Teatro Regio di Torino.
Her recent engagements include the title role Aida at both Oper Frankfurt and the Oper im Steinbruch Festival in St. Margarethen, Tatyana Eugene Onegin at the Opernhaus Zürich, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and the Komische Oper Berlin, and Nastassja Filippovna in Weinberg’s The Idiot at the Theater an der Wien.
Other operatic highlights include Leonora Il trovatore at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Korea National Opera, Liza The Queen of Spades at Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, and Abigaille Nabucco at the Oper im Steinbruch Festival. She also returned to the title role in Tosca at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania.
A principal dramatic soprano of the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg, Sannikova has performed signature roles including Mimì La bohème, Maddalena Andrea Chénier, Leonora Il trovatore, Chrysothemis Elektra, Sieglinde Die Walküre, Elettra Idomeneo, Iguamota Cristoforo Colombo, Joan The Maid of Orleans, and the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos.
Additional performances with the Mariinsky Theatre include the title role and Olga in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Vera Sheloga/Maid of Pskov, Kupava The Snow Maiden, First Soprano in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Nedda Pagliacci, and Clara in Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery.
