“Elmina Hasan, as Adalgisa, captivated from the very first note with her calmly flowing mezzo.” — ConcertoNet

At just 25 years old, Azerbaijani mezzo-soprano Elmina Hasan is swiftly emerging as one of the most compelling young voices on the operatic stage today, with a voice of rich expressiveness and instinctive dramatic presence.

This season Hasan makes a series of important debuts including her house debut as Carmen at Wiener Staatsoper, followed by Siébel Faust at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie - Liège and Dorabella Così fan tutte Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. She returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper as Lola Cavalleria Rusticana, and again for Fenena Nabucco and Maddalena Rigoletto. She also makes her North American debut as Olga Eugene Onegin at Santa Fe Opera Festival.

Recent highlights include Olga Eugene Onegin at the Teatro alla Scala, Marchesa Melibea Il viaggio a Reims at Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Fenena Nabucco at both Teatro Verdi Trieste and Salle Gaveau Paris, where she shared the stage with Plácido Domingo. She has also appeared as Lola Cavalleria Rusticana at the Bayerische Staatsoper and as Dorabella Così fan tutte at the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera.

Her achievements in vocal competitions have garnered international recognition. She was awarded Second Prize, the Pepita Embil Prize for Zarzuela, and the Rolex Audience Prize at Operalia Competition in Mumbai, and previously received First Prize at the Black Sea International Opera Competition.

Staatsoper Berlin - Norma
Gbopera
The Adalgisa of Elmina Hasan, on the other hand drew listeners in with superb piano singing and a fine sense of line. Her voice was equal in power to both Norma’s and Pollione’s, but the atmosphere was transformed when she sang. She and the Oroveso had magic in their voices, sang the words on wonderful techniques, and showed the musical direction which Bellini so diligently created

A sense of theatre and solid singing were also to be found in Hasan’s performance as Adalgisa, and it is no coincidence that the highlights of the evening were scenes where the two women faced each other. In recitatives, as much as in arias, Hasan’s voice complemented Willis-Sørensen’s, and vice versa. Hasan’s mezzo sounded not only full and steady across registers, but also malleable to the situation, her subtle phrasing peppering the first-act duet with Pollione
